Crypto Referral Programs vs Affiliate Programs

A crypto referral program is the invite link any verified user gets inside the app: a lower rate, often for a limited time and sometimes capped. An affiliate program is the application-only version for publishers, with higher rates, longer durations and a dashboard. Here is how the two differ at 12 brands, and which referral offers are worth sharing.

Free to apply. Approval depends on your traffic sources and the program terms.

Key takeaways
  • Referral programs are open to any verified user; affiliate programs need an application and often an audience threshold, such as 500+ followers at MEXC or 5,000+ at Binance.
  • Referral rates are lower and often time-limited: KuCoin pays 25–35% for 365 days, MEXC 40% for 1,080 days, while their affiliate programs pay up to 60% and 70% for life.
  • Fixed-bonus referrals pay per friend, not per trade: Kraken pays $20 per qualifying friend, and Ledger pays $5–$20 in BTC per purchase, capped at $1,000 a year.
  • At Bybit, KuCoin, Ledger and Trezor, the referral and affiliate programs are mutually exclusive, so pick one before you start sharing links.

What a crypto referral program is

Open almost any exchange or wallet app and you’ll find an “Invite friends” button. That’s the referral program: a personal referral codeReferral code A short code a new user enters at sign-up that permanently links their account to you, even if they never click your link. More or link, available to every verified user, that pays you when a friend signs up and trades or buys. No application, no follower count, no affiliate manager.

An affiliate program is the professional tier of the same idea. You apply, the brand checks your website, channel or community, and if you’re approved you get a higher rate, a longer commission period, an affiliate linkAffiliate link Your personal URL that tells the program a visitor came from you. Clicks and sign-ups through it are credited to your account. More with tracking, and usually extra tools. Many brands run both side by side, and the gap between them is often bigger than people expect.

The table above lists 12 brands where we confirmed the user-level referral offer in official sources. The sections below compare those offers with each brand’s affiliate terms.

Who qualifies. Referral programs ask for a verified account. Some add a small hurdle: KuCoin requires the referrer to be KYC-verified, and Hyperliquid requires $10,000 of your own trading volume before you get a code. Affiliate programs set real thresholds. Binance asks individuals for 5,000+ followers or subscribers, KuCoin for 5,000+ followers or a 500-member community, and MEXC for at least 500 followers.

Rates and duration. This is where the gap shows. KuCoin’s referral starts at 25% and can reach 35%, for 365 days; its affiliate program pays 40–60% for the lifetime of the account. MEXC’s referral pays 40% for 1,080 days; affiliates get up to 70% for life. Bybit’s referral pays 20–30% for 365 days, while affiliates get a negotiated lifetime rate.

Caps. Referral programs are where caps live. Bybit caps referral commission at $5,000 per referrer per quarter unless you bring 15 or more qualified new users. Ledger caps referral rewards at $1,000 of BTC per calendar year. Trezor allows 50 referrals or $1,000 per 12 months. Bitvavo caps its 15% referral share at €500 a month.

In plain English

A referral program rewards you for telling friends. An affiliate program pays you as a marketing partner. If you're building a website, YouTube channel or Telegram group, you're in affiliate territory, and the referral terms will usually cap what you can earn.

Best crypto exchange referral programs (fee share)

Exchange referral programs mostly pay a percentage of your friends’ trading feesTrading fees What an exchange charges per trade, usually a small percentage of the trade size. Most exchange affiliate commissions are a share of these fees. More. Here is what each brand in our table offers to regular users.

WEEX has one of the most generous user-level offers in our research: 40% lifetime commission on friends’ eligible spot and futures fees, and referees get 20% more Welcome Gift rewards than through other channels. The affiliate program raises the direct rate to up to 70% and adds up to 10% on sub-affiliates.

MEXC pays referrers 40% of net spot and futures fees for 1,080 days from the friend’s registration, paid daily in the token the friend used to pay fees, such as MX. That last detail matters: your earnings may arrive in a mix of tokens rather than USDT.

CEX.IO runs a single program. The page at cex.io/affiliate-program is the CEX.IO Referral Program, open to every verified user and to publishers, at 30% of referred users’ trading fees for the lifetime of the account. Commercial deals beyond that, such as paid media or agency arrangements, need separate written approval. Time-limited promos are paid on top: a recent one gave 25 USDC to both sides after KYC and a $100+ first fiat deposit.

Bybit pays any Bybit Global user 20% of referees’ net fees, 25% with 5 qualified referees per quarter and 30% with 100 qualified referees or $15M of derivatives volume, for 365 days. On top, there are task rewards of up to 500 USDT shared with the referee. The $5,000 quarterly cap is the catch for anyone with an audience.

KuCoin starts referrers at 25% and adjusts monthly up to 35%, for 365 days after the invitee registers. Commission stops once an invitee reaches VIP 3.

Binance gives every user a 20% default spot commission in Standard Referral Mode. Affiliates move to Referral Pro, with quarterly tiers up to 50% on spot and futures and the option to share up to 20% with referees. Binance.US is a separate company with a flat $10 bonus for each side.

OKX blurs the line: any user can share a referral link, and that same link becomes an affiliate link once you apply and refer 10 valid new users. From there you start at 30% and can reach 50%.

Hyperliquid has no affiliate program at all. Its referral program, open to any wallet with $10,000 of volume, pays 10% of referred users’ fees on their first $1B of volume, and referees get 4% off fees on their first $25M.

Two more fee-share referrals worth knowing: BloFin pays 30% of referees’ net futures fees, distributed about an hour after each trade, and Bitvavo pays 15% of a friend’s transaction fees daily in euro, capped at €500 a month.

Fixed-bonus referral offers

Not every crypto referral program pays a percentage. Many pay a fixed reward per friend who completes a task.

Kraken pays a fixed $20 bonus in your default currency per qualifying friend on the Kraken app and Kraken Pro, delivered within 14 days. Kraken’s Impact affiliate track mainly targets businesses and directs individuals to the referral program; creators can still apply for a negotiated revenue share of up to 50%.

Coinbase gives both sides a crypto or local-currency bonus after the friend’s first qualifying purchase within 90 days of verification. The amount varies by country and caps may apply. The affiliate program, run through Impact, instead pays 50% of the referee’s trading fees for 3 months.

Crypto.com runs several referral schemes. The App Referral Programme pays milestone rewards in CRO based on the friend’s trading volume within 30 days of KYC (in Tier 1 countries, $5 at $100 up to $75 at $5,000), capped at 100 referrals. The Exchange Referral Program pays a CRO bonus of $10 to $2,000 based on the friend’s CRO lockup plus 50% of their net trading fees for 12 months, and is not available in the UK, Hong Kong or the EEA.

Gemini offers up to $50 in crypto to both referrer and friend after a $100+ trade within 30 days, capped at $1,500 per referrer, for users in the US, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Nexo pays in NEXO tokens: you and your friend split 0.5% of their 30-day average balance, up to $2,500 each, once they add $5,000+ in digital assets within 30 days and hold it for another 30 days.

Hardware wallet referral programs

Wallet makers keep referral and affiliate programs strictly apart.

Ledger pays existing customers $5–$20 in BTC per referred purchase, depending on the device, and the friend gets a gift card of equal value. Rewards are capped at $1,000 of BTC per calendar year, and paid ads on Ledger keywords are prohibited. The affiliate program pays 10% of the net order with no annual cap, and you can’t join both.

Trezor gives the friend 10% off a first order of $49+ and the referrer a $20 voucher per qualifying order, as store credit rather than cash. Its affiliate program pays up to 15% in BTC or EUR, and no affiliate commission is paid on orders that used a Refer-A-Friend code.

How referral rewards are paid

Check the payout asset before you share a link, because referral rewards rarely arrive the same way as affiliate commission. MEXC pays referral rebates in whatever token the friend used for fees, so a balance can build up in MX or other coins. Crypto.com pays its referral rewards in CRO, Nexo in NEXO tokens and Ledger in BTC. Kraken pays its $20 bonus in your account’s default currency, and Bitvavo pays in euro to a verified IBAN. Trezor and Koinly pay store credit you can only spend on their own products. If you need predictable income, a reward paid in a volatile token is worth less than the same number in USDT or cash. Our page on affiliate programs that pay in crypto covers payout assets in more detail.

Rules that trip up referrers

Watch out

Referral terms are written for friends sharing with friends. Posting codes on referral-code forums, mass messaging or buying ads on the brand's name can break them. CEX.IO bans posting referral links to large, non-targeted audiences unless the offer allows it, and Ledger bans paid ads on its keywords.

Three more rules catch people out. First, self-referralSelf-referral Signing yourself, or extra accounts you control, up through your own affiliate link to earn commission. Almost every program bans it. More (signing up a second account of your own) and wash trading are treated as abuse; CEX.IO, for example, can review activity up to 180 days back and claw rewards back. Second, many brands make the two programs mutually exclusive: Bybit, BloFin and Bitpanda say so outright, KuCoin excludes affiliate accounts from its referral program, and Trezor pays no affiliate commission on orders that used a referral code. Third, referral binding can be permanent. At Bitunix, a user who wants to switch inviter needs a new account, so the first link they click wins.

When to move from referral to affiliate

Stay with the referral program if you share a link with friends, family or a small chat group. Apply to the affiliate program once you publish content to an audience you don’t personally know. That’s when caps start to cost you money and the extra tools start to pay off: sub-affiliate commission, referee cashback you control and a manager who can raise your rate.

A simple test: if you’d hit Bybit’s $5,000 quarterly cap or KuCoin’s 365-day limit with your current audience, the affiliate version is worth the application. Frequently asked questions

What is the best crypto referral program?

For ongoing income, the strongest user-level referral terms in our research are WEEX (40% lifetime on spot and futures fees), MEXC (40% for 1,080 days) and CEX.IO (30% for the lifetime of the account). For one-off bonuses, Kraken pays $20 per qualifying friend and Gemini up to $50 to both sides in the US, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

What is the difference between a crypto referral program and an affiliate program?

A referral program is open to every verified user and pays a lower rate or a fixed bonus, often for a limited period and sometimes with a cap. An affiliate program requires an application, pays higher rates (up to 50–70% at large exchanges), usually for longer, and adds tools such as sub-affiliates, referee cashback settings and an account manager.

Which crypto exchange has the best referral program for regular users?

WEEX pays any user 40% of friends' eligible spot and futures fees for life. MEXC pays 40% for 1,080 days, Bybit 20–30% for 365 days (capped at $5,000 per quarter unless you bring 15+ qualified new users), KuCoin 25–35% for 365 days and Binance a 20% default spot commission.

Can I use a referral program and an affiliate program at the same time?

Usually not at the same brand. Bybit, BloFin and Bitpanda say the two cannot be combined, KuCoin excludes affiliate accounts from its referral program, and Ledger and Trezor do not let you earn in both. At OKX the referral link simply becomes your affiliate link once you are approved.

Can I post my crypto referral code on forums or social media?

Check the terms first. CEX.IO's terms ban posting referral links to large, non-targeted audiences, including referral-code forums and mass messaging, unless the offer allows it. Bitvavo's friend referral is for personal, non-commercial use only. Our compliance guide covers disclosure rules.
